General Douglas MacArthur was one of a kind. Best known for his command of the Allied Forces in the pacific during World War II, General MacArthur appears on virtually every list of the greatest Generals in U.S. military history.
On October 20, 1944, MacArthur waded ashore onto the Philippine Island of Leyte, fulfilling his promise to return to the area he was forced to flee in 1942. In a radio broadcast that day, he declared, "People of the Philippines, I Have Returned."
This action accelerated the end of Japanese occupation there, and set the wheels in motion to end WWII. For his defense of the Philippines, MacArthur was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.
